We hypothesize that we are social animals that need others in order to self-regulate. Social interaction stresses us and programs neuroticism into our mental processes. The people around have a strong influence in our inner states. It is very likely that we are naturally designed to be that way.
Our current approach to address this issue is not to try to be free from other people (as the western individualism has been trying to do for centuries), but quite the opposite. Since we believe in the power of environments, we are trying to experiment with the social environments we are immersed in to see what we can do to make them healthier.
This involves a much greater level of contact with other people, to share our spaces and our lives in a much more intense way than we are used to do, to blur the limits of what we call privacy and individual. This is a huge gap to jump for most of us since we are trained for the opposite in western societies.
We are experimenting with tribalism from a 21st century perspective with a scientific and experimental attitude. It is not much different from what we experience when we go to festivals; we are just removing the drugs and alcohol.
Since this can be extremely challenging, we try to be delicate about pushing people’s boundaries, although as they say in silicone valley, we try to ‘break things’ from time to time.
The place that we are building in Andalusia is meant to be where we test all these things. We serve as our own lab rats, and you are welcome to join our experiments. It is a challenging predicament, since all resistance, prejudice, ideas, and self-concept will be put to the test. On the other hand, the growth and openness we experience more than justifies the ordeal.
